History

Unverified

The temple publishes the Indrakeeladri tradition as the penance of the Yaksha Keela, the manifestation of Kanaka Durga, Malleswara Swamy as a Jyotirlinga form, and Arjuna's penance for the Pasupatastra. These are traditional narratives on the temple site, not a dated historical record.

Traditional account

Indra and the other deities are said to have worshipped the Goddess on the hill, which then became Indrakeeladri. Because the Goddess is described as shining with a golden radiance, the hill is also associated with the name Kanakachala. After Mahishasura was destroyed, the Goddess is said to have manifested on the mountain with eight arms as Mahishasura Mardini.

Traditional account

The temple says a Yaksha named Keela performed penance to please Goddess Durga and asked that she remain in his heart. She told him to remain as a mountain on the bank of the Krishna River and promised to reside there after destroying demons in the Krita Yuga. That mountain is called Keeladri.
